'L'annonciation aux Bergers'
1860Albumen print? | RCIN 2865037
Photograph of a work by Ary Scheffer, the prime version of which was painted in 1841. The image depicts a group of women, men and children, all gazing upwards to the left. The scene is inspired by the episode of the Annunciation to the Shepherds from the Nativity of Jesus in Bible's Luke 2, in which angels tell a group of shepherds about Christ's birth.
Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
