AFTER ARY SCHEFFER (1795-1858)

'L'Ange annonçant la Résurrection'

1860

Albumen print? | RCIN 2865068

Photograph of a work by Ary Scheffer, the prime version of which was painted in 1858. Inspired by a scene form the Gospel of St Matthew (28:2-5), the image depicts an angel announcing Christ's Resurrection to a group of women. The female figure in the foreground is genuflecting and clasping her hands in supplication, while two others are standing behind her. All three are facing slightly to the right towards the angel who dominates the frame.

Ary Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
