'Apparition de Jésus à la Madeleine'
1860Albumen print? | RCIN 2865067
Photograph of a drawing by Ary Scheffer relating to a painting, the prime version of which was created around 1858. Inspired by a scene from the Gospel of John (20:14-17) in which Mary Madeleine recognises the risen Christ, the image depicts Mary Madeleine (right) and the Christ (left) facing each other. The Christ appears standing level higher than Mary Madeleine, whilst both figures have their hands extended in front of them.
Ary Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
