'Enamelled Ewer by Pierre Courtois'; Painted enamel ewer with the triumphs of Neptune and Ceres
c. 1855Albumen print? | RCIN 2864538
Photograph of a painted enamel ewer created in the second half of the sixteenth century and now in the collection of the Louvre, Paris (MR 2411). The vessel is divided into two narrative zones by a band of dark arabesques on a light ground. The top zone depicts a bearded triton parading in a seascape. He is presented as an ichthyocentaur and holds a leafy branch in each hand. He is followed by a bare-chested winged male figure who blows on a conch. The lower zone shows a triumphal procession outside a city's defence wall. Similarly to the upper zone, the leading figure is on the other side of the vessel.
