c. 1855Albumen print? | RCIN 2864549
Photograph of the side of an enamelled reliquary, created in the mid-twelfth century and believed to contain part of Charlemagne's arm. Photographed with its lid open, the casket forms part of the collection of the Louvre, Paris (MR 347). Five continuous archways enclosing bust-length figures can be seen on the front side. The Virgin is depicted in the centre, flanked by two angels. The archways at either end are occupied by figures related to the father of the Carolingian Dynasty.
