Photograph of a painting by Paul Delaroche, created around 1847 and now in the collection of the Château de Versailles (Inv. no. MV 1932). The work depicts Charlemagne (742-814) leading his troops through the Alps. The Carolingian king can be seen on horseback in the centre of the scene, facing to the right and raising up his sword. He is surrounded by numerous fallen and fighting soldiers, as well as officers on rearing horses.
