A photograph of a black chalk drawing by Giulio Romano (c. 1519-1520) depicting a man hurling a rock in his hands now in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle (RCIN 990339). Annotated on the verso.
This is a life study for the figure in the right foreground of the modello for Giulio Romano's Stoning of St Stephen, a painting commissioned by the papal councillor Giovanni Matteo Giberti for the Church of Santo Stefano, Genoa. There are many differences between the modello (a copy of which survives in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, inv. 334) and the painting, which suggests that Raphael was the artist initially choosen for this commission (Clayton). Clayton catalogued this drawing as by Giulio Romano but drawn "to Raphael's design before his death" (see Bibliographic References).
