AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

A man with a book and Apollo

1860

Albumen print | 26.6 x 19.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2864186

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1508-1509) depicting a man holding a book and Apollo holding a lyre now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille (inv. no. 448). This drawing features four figure studies on the verso (see RCIN 854311 for a photograph of the verso). Annotated on the verso.

The drawing has been interpreted as a study for the Disputa (The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament) painted by Raphael around 1508-09 in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. Joannides (see Bibliographic References) questioned whether the two figures were intended as separate studies or designed to be together; because the squaring is visible only in the upper part of the bearded man, this figure only might have been used for the Disputa (in the right foreground, behind the parapet). Joannides also suggested that, alternatively this man could have been used as a study for the School of Athens.

A copy of this photograph (RCIN 854309) can be found in the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection, portfolio 47 (970607).
