Four figure studies

Albumen print | 28.5 x 20.7 cm (image) | RCIN 2864185

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1508-1509) depicting four figure studies now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille (inv. no. 447). This drawing is on the verso of a depiction of a man holding a book and Apollo holding a lyre (see RCIN 854309 for a photograph of the recto). Annotated on the verso.

The drawing has been interpreted as a study for the Disputa (The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament) painted by Raphael around 1508-09 in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. Joannides (see Bibliographic References) catalogued the three main figures as the seated St Gregory and two acolytes behind him. The central man was then moved to the outer left edge in the fresco.

A copy of this photograph (RCIN 854311) can be found in the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection, portfolio 47 (970607)
