EDUARD MANDEL (1810-82)

A portrait of a young man, formerly supposed to be Raphael

dated 1860

Engraving | 54.8 x 43.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850092

An engraving reproducing a painting now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.613). This print is signed and dated by the printmaker and lettered with a title, publication details and the attribution of the painting to Raphael.

The painting has long been attributed to Raphael, an opinion also shared by Ruland (1876) but no longer accepted by modern scholars. The names of Parmigianino and Correggio have been recently suggested. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.

A photograph of this portrait is also included in the "Portraits by Raphael" section of the Raphael Collection (see RCIN 852043 for it).
