PAZZI, ANTONIO (1706-66)

A portrait of a young man formerly supposed to be Raphael

c.1740-1760

Engraving with etching | 32.4 x 23.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850091

A print after a painting now in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (inv. no.1059), where it is catalogued as by an artist of the Umbrian school and dated c.1505. This print is lettered with production details, location of the painting in Florence and title, which identifies Raphael as the sitter.

The authorship of the painting and the identity of the sitter are matters of dispute. In the past it has been suggested that the painting may be a self-portrait painted by Raphael. Ruland (1876) believed the work to be by Raphael and interpreted it as a portrait of a young man of the Riccio Family in Florence. See Bibliographic References for further information.

A print after this painting is also included in the "Portraits by Raphael" section of the Raphael Collection (see RCIN 851998).
