Holy Families & Madonna and Child

The Virgin and Child with two Angels [‘The Madonna of the Candelabra’]

c.1833-1876

Etching and engraving | RCIN 850971

A print based on the so-called ‘Madonna of the Candelabra’, a circular painting now in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (inv. no.37.484), the attribution of which is still disputed. With the publisher’s blind stamp (Lugt 2140). Lettered with production details.

The execution of the painting is generally ascribed to the workshop of Raphael, with the master’s role in the invention of the composition being questioned. Ruland attributed the painting to Raphael and listed it as being in the possession of the late Mr Hugh Andres Johnstone Munro of Novar (Scotland) at the time the Raphael Collection catalogue was compiled. For a photograph of the painting, see RCIN 850968.

Showing the Virgin supporting the Christ Child seating on a cushion, with a candelabrum on the right.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
