The execution of the painting is generally ascribed to the workshop of Raphael, with the master’s role in the invention of the composition being questioned. Ruland attributed the painting to Raphael and catalogued it as being then in the possession of the late Mr Hugh Andres Johnstone Munro of Novar (Scotland).
