Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

The Virgin and Child

dated 1824

Etching and engraving | 21.6 x 15.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850970

A print reproducing the central portion of the so-called ‘Madonna of the Candelabra’, a circular painting now in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (inv. no.37.484), the attribution of which is still disputed. Lettered with the title and production details. Not listed in Ruland's Raphael Collection catalogue (1876). A photograph of the painting can be found at RCIN 850968.

The execution of the painting is generally ascribed to the workshop of Raphael, with the master’s role in the invention of the composition being questioned. Ruland attributed the painting to Raphael and catalogued it as being then in the possession of the late Mr Hugh Andres Johnstone Munro of Novar (Scotland).

Showing the Virgin gazing down to the right and supporting the Christ Child with both hands, who seats on a cushion; in an oval.
