Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

ADOLPHE BRAUN (1812-77)

The Virgin and Child with two Angels

1860-1877

Carbon print | 69.9 x 53.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850972

A photograph of a painting which, as lettered on the sheet, was then in the collection of M.J.C. Robinson, London and thought to be by Raphael. Lettered with the title and production details. Not listed in Ruland’s Raphael Collection catalogue (1876).

The painting is a copy of the so-called now in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (inv. no.37.484). For a photograph of the Madonna of the Candelabra, see RCIN 850968.

The attribution of the Madonna of the Candelabra is still disputed. The execution of the painting is generally ascribed to the workshop of Raphael, with the master’s role in the invention of the composition being questioned.

Showing the Virgin supporting the Christ Child seating on a cushion, with two angels holding candelabra at either side.
