Holy Families & Madonna and Child

ANTON KRÜGER (1795-1857)

The Virgin and Child reading in a landscape

c.1815-1847

Engraving with etching | 18.0 x 13.8 cm (image) | RCIN 850650

An engraving after a varied and larger copy of Raphael’s ‘Conestabile Madonna’ (c.1503-04; Hermitage, inv. no.GS 252), the circular format of which has been altered. Lettered with the title, location of the painting and production details.

As lettered on the print, the copy was formerly thought to be by Raphael and was then housed in the sacristy of the church of Santa Maria della Misericordia, Perugia. According to Ruland (1876), the painting was deposited in the Pincoteca Civica, Perugia. See RCIN 850645 for a photograph of the Hermitage painting.
