Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER THOMAS RICHARD WILLIAMS (1825-71)

'Victoria, Princess Royal, later German Empress Frederick III (1840-1901)'

c. 1856

RCIN 2084336

Glass plate negative of a daguerreotype featuring of a near full length portrait of Victoria, Princess Royal, later German Empress Frederick III (1840-1901) on her 16th birthday. The princess stands, facing halfway to the left and gazes ahead, away from the camera. She holds her hands together in front of her waist and wears an off-the-shoulder light coloured dress, gloves, pearls and a jewel hairpiece. There is a screen and drapery beside her.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Although the original daguerreotype is historically missing, a print from this negative exists in the Collection (RCIN 2900083). For a hand-coloured version of the image, see RCIN 2914270.
