Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER THOMAS RICHARD WILLIAMS (1825-71)

'Princess Louise, later Duchess of Argyll (1848-1939)'

c. 1856

RCIN 2084335

Glass plate negative of a daguerreotype featuring a full length portrait of Princess Louise, later Duchess of Argyll (1848-1939), standing, facing slightly to the right. The princess gazes to the far left, away from the camera. She rests one arm on a small circular table beside her. A vase and newspaper are positioned on the table.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Although the original daguerreotype is historically missing, a print from this negative exists in the Collection (RCIN 2900086).
