The Queen's Sitting Room. Windsor Castle

c. 1901

RCIN 2084178

Glass plate negative of the Queen's Siting Room, in the Private Apartments, Windsor Castle. The pictures include (from left to right): a portrait of Victoria, Princess Royal by Winterhalter (RCIN 404580) in an oval frame, a framed case of miniatures; above a mirrored door, there is a portrait of the young Princess Alice by Winterhalter, which was given to the Empress Frederick by Edward VII in 1901 and is now at the Hessiche Hausstiftung, Museum Schloss Fasanerie; a portrait of Prince Arthur as a child, in the Scots Guards uniform (RCIN 401032) by Franz Winterhalter (by door) and another framed case of miniatures. On the far wall beside the door are two paintings: one is of Princess Helena in Highland costume by Winterhalter, which was taken by the Princess after Queen Victoria's death in 1901 but returned to the Royal Collection many years later (RCIN 405038), and a portrait of Prince Arthur dressed as Henry VIII by Carl Schmidt, after Winterhalter, which was taken by the Duchess of Connaught (Prince Arthur's widow) in 1901 (WC Inv 651).

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however a variant negative from the same session is represented by RCIN 2100597.
