Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Princess Beatrice (1857-1944)

Jun 1860

RCIN 2082526

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Princess Beatrice standing, facing slightly to the left and gazing ahead, away from the camera. The princess holds a fan in her right hand and a posy of flowers in her left. She wears a floral headdress, a locket and a light coloured dress with a full skirt. She poses in front of a balustrade.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however there are several variants from the same sitting survining (e.g. 2900333).
