Princess Alice and Prince Arthur, John Brown holding the pony, Balmoral
Sep 1858RCIN 2083270
Glass plate negative taken within the grounds of Balmoral. Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse (1843-78), is depicted seated side-saddle on pony, looking to the front. Prince Arthur, later Duke of Connaught (1850-1942), stands facing three-quarters to the right, holding the reigns of the horse. He wears Highland dress. John Brown (1827-83) stands on the right, partly shielded by the pony's head.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2906724.
