Glass plate negative of painting of an infant Prince Leopold (1853-84), created by Franz Xaver Winterhalter in 1853. The prince is dressed in the white satin and Honiton lace robe worn at his christening on 28 June 1853 and is lying on an ermine-lined robe. The painting is held by the Royal Collection (RCIN 405106) and is displayed in the Bow Room, Buckingham Palace.
The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection, (e.g. RCINs 2506528 and 2905944).
