'Prince Leopold'
c. 1855RCIN 2083162
Glass plate negative of painting of Prince Leopold, later Duke of Albany (1853-1884) created by Franz Xaver Winterhalter in 1855 (RCIN 405036). The prince is pictured standing, facing slightly to the right. He wears a dress, a garment often worn by young boys at the time.
The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller oval.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2512922.
