Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER (1805-73)

The cousins: Queen Victoria and Victoire, Duchesse de Nemours

c. 1852

RCIN 2083165

Glass plate negative of a painting created by Franz Xaver Winterhalter in 1852 (RCIN 404875). The picture depicts a half-length double portrait of Queen Victoria  (1819-1901) and her cousin, Victoire, Duchesse de Nemours (1822-57). Their faces are captured in profile to the right. The hand of a man can be seen on the far left holding the painting in place.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exists in the Collection (e.g. RCINs 2915691 and 616248).
