LEONIDA CALDESI (1823-91)
Prince Arthur, later Duke of Connaught (1850-1942)
7 - 7 Apr 1858RCIN 2083647
Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Prince Arthur standing, facing slightly to the right. He looks towards the camera and places one arm on the back of a chair. The prince wears the costume of son of King Henry IV, featuring a tunic with pointed collar and tights. His hat can be seen on the chair.
The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection, see RCINs 2900166 and 2917897 (for a hand-colour version).
