Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

LEONIDA CALDESI (1823-91)

Prince Leopold, later Duke of Albany (1853-84)

7 - 7 Apr 1859

RCIN 2083646

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Prince Leopold standing, facing three-quarters to the left. He looks direclty at the camera and places one arm on the back of a chair. The prince wears the costume of son of King Henry IV, featuring a tunic with pointed collar and tights. His hat can be seen on the chair.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection, RCINs 2900168, 2915696 and 2917896 (for a hand-colour version).
