Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

WILLIAM BAMBRIDGE (1820-79)

Prince Leopold, later Duke of Albany (1853-84)

1 - 1 Dec 1858

RCIN 2084440

Glass plate negative of a full-length portrait of Prince Leopold, later Duke of Albany (1853-84) standing, facing slightly towards the right. He looks towards the camera. He poses with one arm resting on the back of a covered chair. He wears Highland dress and holds a hat in his opposite hand.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2900152.
