Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

PRINCE ALFRED, DUKE OF EDINBURGH AND SAXE-COBURG & GOTHA (1844-1900)

Madeleine, Countess Blücher von Wahlstätt and Countess Schulenburg

Mar 1862

RCIN 2082721

Glass plate negative featuring two full-length portraits of Countess Schulenburg (left) and Countess Blücher von Wahlstätt (right). The sitters are shown in similar poses, seated and facing towards the righ, holding a posy in their lap. They both wear dark dress and bonnet. A series of plants and small trees are visible in the background.

Both countesses were members of the Royal Household of Victoria, Crown Princess of Prussia.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from these images exist in the Collection, RCIN 2917640 and 2917639.
