Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

PRINCE ALFRED, DUKE OF EDINBURGH AND SAXE-COBURG & GOTHA (1844-1900)

Madeleine, Countess Blücher von Wahlstätt

1862

RCIN 2082734

Glass plate negative featuring two full-length portraits of Madeleine, Countess Blücher von Wahlstätt, seated, facing three-quarters to the right. She turns her head towards the camera and gazes ahead. She wears a dark coloured bonnet, shawl and dress. The Countess was a member of the Royal Household of Victoria, Crown Princess of Prussia.

The negative image on the left has been scratched out, an act perhaps indicative of a displeasing pose.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from the intact image exists in the Collection, RCIN 2917638.
