Christmas tables, Windsor Castle

Glass plate negative showing Christmas tables set up at the King's Writing Room at Windsor Castle (F207) in 1860. The tables are adorned with gifts including sculptures, paintings and other decorative objects. Among the paintings are Guillaume Koller's 'The Summons' (RCIN 406239), a copy of Lucas Cranach the Elder's 'Johann Friedrich I, der Grossmuthige' (RCIN 400634) and Emily Mary Osborn's 'The Governess' (RCIN 4400058).

The Royal Family generally spent Christmas at Windsor Castle, where they had several Christmas tables for each other and for members of the Royal Household. Presents were distributed on Christmas Eve.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Royal Collection.
