Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII (1841-1919) as 'Winter

c.1880 copy of an original of 10 Feb 1854

RCIN 2083639

Glass plate negative of a photograph depicting a full length portrait of the Prince of Wales. The prince is dressed in the character of Winter for the Tableaux of the Seasons, performed at Windsor Castle in 1854. He wears a false beard, hat and cape and holds an axe and what appears to be a trap. His hat and cape is covered in fake snow.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from the Fenton's original negative exist in the Collection, e.g. RCIN 2106404.
