Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Albert Edward, Prince of Wales

Aug 1855

RCIN 2084858

Glass plate negative of a full-length double portrait of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII (1841-1910) and Prince Alfred, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900) seated together on a grassy mound. Prince Alfred faces to the left, his face captured in profile, and leans towards his brother who faces towards the camera, and gazes downwards. The Prince of Wales holds a shotgun with both hands. Both princes wear Highland dress.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2900052.
