After the unpopularity of their own design the Building Committee accepted Joseph Paxton's design for the Exhibition building, which later became known as the Crystal Palace. In this letter Colonel Reid describes to Colonel Phipps the erection of the Crystal Palace, including the installation of the first iron columns and concrete foundations.
