WILLIAM RUSSELL (1800-84)

Letter from William Russell to Charles Ruland sending a picture from Sir Joshua Reynolds's collection which may be by Raphael, and some items from a recent sale.

1 Jul 1860

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/125

Russell sends a small picture of 'Wrestling with the Angel' which was in Sir Joshua Reynolds's collection and then thought to be by Raphael. He remarks that among the photographs he saw [in the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection], a beautiful drawing now at Oxford, bought from the King of Holland's sale, seemed to be missing and he is sending a tracing of it. He is also sending 'a few choice items' from Wilkie's recent sale. 'Wilkie' may be a reference to the painter Sir David Wilkie (d. 1841) but this is not clear.
