WILLIAM RUSSELL (1800-84)

Letter from William Russell to Charles Ruland about a Raphael drawing in very poor conditon which he has sent to him, and also sending two drawings by Giovanni da Udine.

29 Jun 1860

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/124

Russell remarks that he is 'almost ashamed' to send a drawing in such bad condition for the Prince Consort to see, but thinks 'the poor rag of Tapestry' is still redolent of Raphael, particularly the Amorino in the composition. He does not see anything of Giovanni da Udine in it, and sends two examples of his work to show the difference.

Russell is presumably referring to the cartoon mentioned in VIC/ADDA10/85/121, perhaps a design for a tapestry.
