PHILIPP HOFF (ACTIVE C. 1860S)
Letter from the photographer Philipp Hoff, probably to Dr. Ernst Becker, about photographing the Raphael drawings in the Städel Institute in Frankfurt.
29 Jan 1860Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/444
Hoff writes to say that the [Raphael] drawings in the Städel Institute in Frankfurt will have to be photographed there, as the Institute does not willingly lend out drawings. He is however confident that Herr Passavant, whom he knows well from the years he spent studying as a sculptor at the Institute, will arrange everything in the most helpful way. He will in any case have to wait for better weather as two of the drawings are very dark and faint.
He will do the work on the first fine day available, but he asks for details of the size required and the way in which the other photographs are mounted, so that his photographs will fit in with them. He asks for this letter (either this one or VIC/ADDA10/85/445) to be passed on to Charles Ruland.
The letter is endorsed with a note bracketing this letter with Hoff's letter to Ruland of 4 February (see VIC/ADDA10/85/445) and summing up the subject, i.e. Hoff is willing to do the photography and asks for measurements.
Dr. Becker had recently handed over to Charles Ruland, so it is presumed that Hoff has written this letter to him, having presumably been in contact with him before, although he is aware that Ruland will be dealing with the matter.
Related Material: For related correspondence, see VIC/ADDA10/85/445.
