PROFESSOR ANDREAS MÜLLER
Letter from Professor Andreas Müller to the Prince Consort sending his memoir on the original Raphael engraving he has discovered in the collection of the Düsseldorf Academy of Art.
4 Nov 1860Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/471
Professor Müller writes that the Prince already knows of his discovery of an engraving by Raphael himself in the Düsseldorf Academy of Art; he had hoped to show it to HRH during his visit to the city last year, but there was no time to do so. HRH's great interest in the visual arts, however, especially in relation to Raphael, emboldens Müller to send him a copy of his memoir on the engraving, which has now been published with facsimile illustrations. The Prince Regent of Prussia has graciously accepted its dedication, and Müller hopes it will win the Prince Consort's approbation.
He adds that he has also discovered several other works by Raphael in the Academy's collection, namely a few studies and three landscape drawings. He hopes one day to be able to show the Prince, who is such a connoisseur and lover of art, the treasures of the collection.
See VIC/ADDA10/85/456 for Müller's previous letter about this engraving. His reference here to the Prince's visit to Düsseldorf must relate to the 1858 visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to Germany, when they stopped at Düsseldorf for a night on their way to Berlin.
