JOHANN DAVID PASSAVANT (1787-1861)

Letter from J.D. Passavant to Charles Ruland sending photographs of his own drawings of a work by Raphael in Citta di Castello.

9 Dec 1860

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/472

Passavant writes that when he saw Ruland in Frankfurt recently he mentioned two photographs of his drawings of pictures of ?parts of a flag by Raphael in Citta di Castello, which he had promised to send to the Prince Consort if they came out well. The photographer Schäfer has now taken them and they seem to Passavant to be as good as possible in the circumstances. He is sending them to Ruland and asks him to present them to the Prince as a token of Passavant's high regard for him, and to tell the Prince that he will be delighted if his small gift will be of some help in completing HRH's collection of copies of Raphael's works. He reports that he has heard nothing further about the Raphael Cartoons at Hampton Court [of which he had requested photographs from the South Kensington Museum] and doubts that he can expect anything before the end of the year. He is sure that Ruland would have done anything he could to pursue this matter; but he would be grateful for any information Ruland can give him.
