VICTORIA, QUEEN OF THE UNITED KINGDOM (1819-1901)

Queen Victoria's account of the Prince Consort's illness and death

1 Jan 1861 - 28 Feb 1901

Slim blue volume | 1 volume (55 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/MAIN/Z/142

Queen Victoria's account of her husband's illness and subsequent death on 14 December 1861, taken from her journals. The account begins on the 9 November 1861 and continues until the 14 December 1861. The last entry, which provides an account of Prince Albert's death, was written in February 1872.

She also makes reference to the deaths of her cousins Pedro V of Portugal and Infante Fernando of Portugal, plus the Trent Affair and Prince Albert's assistance in writing a draft memorandum to Lord Russell (see VIC/MAIN/Q/9/23).

It seems as though the volume was originally bequeathed to Princess Helena as a note in her hand is attached to the inside of the front cover. Dated 28 February 1901, it records her wish for the volume to be 'Bequeathed to my daughter Victoria - in case of her death without heirs it is to go to my son Albert [and] his descendants...'.
