Letter from the King of the Belgians to Lord Melbourne
1 - 31 Dec 1839Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/MAIN/Z/273/9
The King of the Belgians suggests [Baron] Stockmar as the most suitable individual in Coburg to assist in settling and signing Prince Albert's marriage treaty. He reflects on the difficult position of a husband to the Sovereign and outlines Prince Albert's character. The King of the Belgians stresses the importance of a suitable match for Queen Victoria and states that Lord Melbourne is the only man who can speak out to her about her union. He also suggests that Prince Albert takes on an English name and is considered an Englishman.
