PIETRO SANTI BARTOLI (1635-1700)

The punishment of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram

published 1675

Etching | 7.0 x 23.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853686

An etching by Pietro Santi Bartoli reproducing, in reverse, the almost entirely destroyed fresco 'The punishment of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the ninth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Numbered at lower right: 10. Trimmed to image. Published in 'Imagines veteris ac novi Testamenti in Vaticani Palatii' (1675).

According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs. There is no complete copy of this particular basamento fresco, as it was partially destroyed early in the sixteenth century when a door was cut into the wall. The subject of the fresco was not recognised by Ruland in his catalogue of the Raphael Collection (1876).
