published c.1811-16Lithograph | 18.5 x 14.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853687
A lithograph by Piloty reproducing a detail of running figures from a drawing, once probably in Munich, after the almost entirely destroyed fresco 'The punishment of Korah, Dathan and Abiram' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the ninth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Lettered with attribution of the composition to Raphael and signed by the printmaker. Printed within an imitation of a ruled pen and ink border. Published in Christian von Mannlich, Les Oeuvres Lithographiques, (1811-16), vol. 2, 22.
Les Oeuvres Lithographiques reproduced drawings in the collection of the King of Bavaria.
According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs. The subject of the fresco was not recognised by Ruland in his catalogue of the Raphael Collection (1876).
