The gathering of manna

Albumen print | 22.3 x 37.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853685

A photograph of a drawing catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of the late Baron Marochetti. Ruland considered the drawing to be similar to an engraving made by Agostino Veneziano (see RCIN 853683 for an impression) which was thought to reproduce a preparatory study for the almost entirely destroyed fresco 'The gathering of manna' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the eighth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican.

This drawing, and the Veneziano engraving, are very different from the fresco executed in the eighth loggia, as depicted in a print made by Pietro Santi Bartoli (see RCIN 853675 for an impression of this print).

According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.
