The infant Moses found by the river

A facsimile reproduction after an etching by J. Stuart, which he had made from a drawing then in the collection of Cardinal Valenti in Rome. The Valenti drawing is now in the Staatliche Museen, Berlin (see RCIN 853512), where it is considered a copy after a drawing now in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, attributed to Giovanni Francesco Penni. The drawing by Penni is the design for the fresco The infant Moses found by the river painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the eighth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Lettered with production details and an inscription both attributing the drawing to Raphael and detailing the ownership of the drawing by Valenti.

Passavant (see Bibliographic References) referenced this drawing as the original design for the fresco, and confused it with the drawing then (1839) held by Samuel Woodburn as part of the Thomas Lawrence estate (that now in the V&A).
