AFTER RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

Study for eight figures in the 'Parnassus'

c.1853-76

Salted paper print | 28.1 x 18.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852501

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1510) now in the British Museum, London (inv. no.Pp,1.73). The drawing is a preparatory study for eight figures depicted in the left-hand portion of Raphael's fresco of Parnassus, painted in c.1510-11 in the Stanza della Segnatura, Vatican. It differs in a few details from the fresco. Formerly rejected as by Raphael, the drawing is now universally accepted as by his hand.
