AFTER A WORK COPYING PERINO DEL VAGA (FLORENCE 1501-ROME 1547)

Study for an allegorical figure

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 27.1 x 17.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852660

A photograph of a drawing now in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle (RCIN 990413). The drawing is a copy from the monochrome fresco depicting the allegorical figure of Speculative Philosophy, painted by Perino del Vaga beneath the 'School of Athens' in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. The monochrome scenes in the basamenti of Raphael's frescoes in the Stanza della Segnatura were painted at the request of Pope Paul III, who wished to replace the intarsia panels by Fra Giovanni da Verona that were probably damaged during the Sack of Rome in 1527.
