AFTER PERINO DEL VAGA (FLORENCE 1501-ROME 1547)
A set of prints after the basamento decoration of the Stanza della Segnatura
published c.1830-8Etchings | RCIN 852659
A set of four prints reproducing ten compositions and eight Caryatids decorating the basamento of the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. Ruland (1876) catalogued these prints as from Montagnani's Illustrazione storico-pittorica con incisioni a contorni delle pitture nelle stanze vaticane di Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, Rome 1830. They have also been described as published in Le Pitture delle Stanze Vaticane...incise a contorno...con li basamenti inediti, Rome 1838.
The monochrome scenes in the basamenti of Raphael's frescoes in the Stanza della Segnatura were painted by Perino del Vaga at the request of Pope Paul III (r.1534-49), who wished to replace intarsia work probably destroyed during the Sack of Rome in 1527.
