ETIENNE BAUDET (1636-1711)

Set of five prints supposedly after frescoes in the window embrasures of Raphael's Stanze

c.1658-1705

Etching with engraving | RCIN 852661

A set of five prints said to reproduce frescoes painted in the window embrasures of Raphael's Stanze in the Vatican. From a series of six numbered plates (including title-page) engraved by Etienne Baudet (1638-1711) and published by Drevet in Paris, entitled Divers ornements de Raphaël peints aux embrasures des fenêtres du Vatican.

Each print reproduces a panel decorated with a central narrative scene surrounded by grotesques, mythological creatures, animals and human figures. According to Passavant (1860), the central scenes depict: A Woman led before a Tribunal (a), The Annunciation (b), The Judgement of Paris (c), Christ Appearing to St Peter (d), A Tribunal (e). Passavant expressed doubts about the authenticity of the compositions which he found difficult to establish. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
