PIETRO SANTI BARTOLI (1635-1700)

Joseph addresses his brothers

published 1675

Etching | 7.5 x 22.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853672

An etching by Pietro Santi Bartoli reproducing, in reverse, the almost entirely destroyed fresco 'Joseph addresses his brothers' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the seventh bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Lettered with Bible quote in Latin (Genesis 45) and with attribution of the composition to Raphael. Signed by Bartoli at lower left and numbered on plate at lower right: 7. Trimmed on all sides. Published in 'Imagines veteris ac novi Testamenti in Vaticani Palatii' (1675).

According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.
