Tapestries

ATTRIBUTED TO GIUSEPPE NICCOLÒ VICENTINO (ACTIVE C. 1530-50)

The miraculous draught of fishes

published 1609

Chiaroscuro woodcut from three blocks | 22.6 x 34.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853020

A chiaroscuro woodcut reproducing (in reverse) a composition corresponding with a drawing ascribed to Raphael now also in the Royal Collection (912749). This is a later state published by Andrea Andreani in 1609, bearing his publishing address (Mantua) at lower left and with retouching in the sky. An early state impression can be found at RCIN 853019.

The Windsor drawing is a study for the final composition of 'The Miraculous Draught of Fishes', one from a set of ten tapestry cartoons commissioned from Raphael by Pope Leo X illustrating episodes from the lives of St Peter and St Paul. The tapestries, woven in the Brussels workshop of Pieter van Aelst and intended to be hung in the Sistine Chapel, are now in the Vatican Museums. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
