The Windsor drawing is a study for the final composition of 'The Miraculous Draught of Fishes', one from a set of ten tapestry cartoons commissioned from Raphael by Pope Leo X depicting episodes from the lives of St Peter and St Paul. The tapestries, woven in the Brussels workshop of Pieter van Aelst and intended to be hung in the Sistine Chapel, are now in the Vatican Museums.
